Help Get the Word Out About Healthy People 2020

You may have commented on the newly released Healthy People 2020 objectives, but did you help get the word out?

As part of Healthy People 2020, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Healthy People team are encouraging you not only to comment, but also to encourage others to participate. Show that you care by uploading a free Healthy People 2020 Web badge to your Web site or blog. Choose your size, and it is as easy as copying and pasting.

For three decades, Healthy People has provided a set of science-based national 10-year health objectives for promoting health and preventing disease. With your help, we can all work to build a healthier Nation.

You can also join the Healthy People Consortium—a diverse, motivated, and dedicated group of agencies and organizations committed to working together to realizeHealthy People’s goals and objectives.

Over 600 dance, health and physical educators took advantage of the MAHPERD Professional Development Conference on October 16th and 17th. Those in attendance now know lots of new ways to keep kids fit and healthy. A survey to attendees will be forthcoming in the near future. Please take the time to complete it as it will drive the direction and location of the 2010 MAHPERD Conference.

Welcome new MAHPERD members. As each of you were entered into the database, you would have received an email with your user name and password. Please check NOW to see if your information was entered correctly. A very important area to complete is in regards to your school and your county of employment (if you are a teacher.) Click here to check your membership. You can change anything that isn't correct and also change your password. It is especially important to check your email as that is the sole method of communicating with you during the year. If you think your school system is blocking your eNews, please change your email to a personal one if possible.

MAHPERD Scholarships

MAHPERD Scholarship forms are available for graduating high school seniors (pursuing a degree in dance, health, physical education or recreation) and undergraduate sophomore and juniors enrolled in a undergraduate dance, health, physical education or recreation program. All scholarship forms are due March 30th.

The Maryland Physical Education Demonstration Schools Program recognizes exemplary physical education programs and teachers across the state and encourages visits to these sites by other physical educators. The decline in the economy has affected me in the following ways:
I have had to supplement my income with employment in addition to my full time job.
My spouse/significant other has had a decline in income.
My retirement fund has had a significantly decline.
I cut back on vacation plans for the summer.
I am more wary of where I spend my discretionary funds.
I have put off home improvements or maintenance projects because of cost.
Tuition for my children is now a bigger concern.
Big expenses have been deleted from the family priority list.
