Award Guidelines for High School Seniors

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Any student who is a senior and is enrolled in a Maryland high school (public or private) is eligible for this scholarship. Students must plan to enroll as a full time student in a teacher preparation program in Dance, Health, Physical Education or Recreation at a collegiate institution.
  2. The applicant shall rank in the upper one-half of the senior class.
  3. The applicant shall hold a current G.P.A. of 2.5 or better, computed on a four point system.
  4. The applicant shall show evidence of leadership qualities in the community and extracurricular participation, especially those that may have an impact on the future career in teaching.
B. APPLICATION
  1. Official application forms may be obtained from MAHPERD website at mahperd.org.
  2. Three letters of recommendation should accompany the completed application.
    1. one letter from a member of the physical education staff of the high school
    2. one letter from a school staff member outside of the department of physical education
    3. one letter from a person not a member of the school staff, excluding relatives
  3. The form indicating the student’s present G.P.A. and class rank should be completed by a school official and returned with the application.
  4. All forms and letters must be submitted to the MAHPERD Scholarship Committee by May 15, 2007. The documents can be sent to:

C. SELECTION
  1. Completed applications will be reviewed in May.
  2. Award recipients will be notified and announced upon acceptance and enrollment in a higher education instutition.
  3. Final awards will be made upon evidence of full time enrollment and paid tuition at the institution of the recipient’s choice.
  4. A formal presentation of the scholarship will take place at the MAHPERD annual convention during the awards banquet.
