Maryland Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance Applied Strategic Plan

(Revised March 2006)

With the exception of critical and/or extenuating circumstances, all actions or motions for action which come before the Executive Board must show direct relationship to the current MAHPERD Applied Strategic Plan. The following priorities shall be included in the agendas of Executive Board meetings.

MAHPERD Priorities

  • Increase and activate membership.
  • Maintain quality public relations, communications, and advocacy programs.
  • Promote and increase student involvement.
  • Identify and recognize quality programs and outstanding professionals.
  • Provide opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Support and promote quality programs in health, physical education, recreation, and dance.
  • Identify and solicit additional means of financial support and funding.
  • Maintain Association archives.
  • Promote current research and advocacy for HPERD
  • Support and promote research and grant programs in HPERD.

The following priorities will be the responsibility of the Executive Board to implement. The Executive Board shall also review the ASP annually for purposes of assessment and goal management and/or adjustment.

Priority #1: Increase and activate membership.

1.1 The Executive Director, Executive Board members, and Convention Planning members shall continue to recruit new members through various marketing strategies.
1.2 The Public Relations committee shall maintain a network of area/county representatives to promote membership at the local level.
1.3 The President shall encourage new appointments from persons who have not previously or recently served in MAHPERD to the standing committees.

Priority #2: Improve and expand public relations, communications, and advocacy.

2.1 The Public Relations Chairperson shall initiate a year-round program of publicity to inform the public of the aims and programs of MAHPERD, of the professions it embraces, and of the annual convention and other special programs in conjunction with the Executive Board.
2.2 The Public Relations Committee shall develop and maintain an informational calendar of statewide HPERD activities.
2.3 The Public Relations Committee shall display a booth for the promotion of MAHPERD at the annual convention. This booth will be available for use at various agency conferences and workshops for the purpose of promoting the program, services, and vision of MAHPERD.
2.4 The Public Relations Committee shall maintain a list of other educational/professional conferences (Elementary Principal’s Association, PT A and School Board Associations, etc.) and plan for representatives to attend on a regular basis as an exhibitor and/or presenter.
2.5 The Legislative Committee shall advocate the goals and purposes of health, physical education, recreation, and dance to congressional leaders through letter writing, email, and phone calls.
2.6 The Executive Board shall share all policies, procedures, and actions of the Association with MAHPERD membership through the Journal and The MAHPERD Web Site.
2.7 The Executive Director shall disseminate all appropriate communications received from the Alliance, EDA, and other professional associations through our Web Site, Executive Board meetings, and our state Journal.
2.8 The President shall provide a listing of all officers and committee chairs for printing in the Winter Journal.
2.9 The Webmaster in conjunction with the President shall assure the maintenance of the MAHPERD Web Site.
2.10 The MAHPERD office shall serve as a material and resource center and be regularly overseen by the Executive Director.
2.11 Use current research as a tool for advocacy.

Priority #3: Promote and increase student involvement.

3.1 The Convention Planning Committee will promote and maintain the number of student-sponsored sessions and participation at the annual convention.
3.2 The student advisor shall maintain a network of professionals and students from colleges and universities within the state to promote and develop student involvement.
3.3 The Executive Board of MAHPERD shall assist colleges and universities in the promotion of MAHPERD to its student majors.
3.4 The President, with the help of the Student Advisor, will meet with student majors at the annual Convention in health, physical education, recreation, and dance from around our state, to discern how MAHPERD could better serve its student members.

Priority #4: Identify and recognize quality programs and outstanding professionals.

4.1 The Awards Committee shall review and evaluate the Association’s award process on a regular basis and recommend changes to the Executive Board.
4.2 The Past-President and the president-elect shall ensure that “Outstanding Professionals”, “Teachers of the Year” and the professionals at our state Demonstration Schools be given an opportunity to present their program features at the Annual Convention and/or Spring Project.
4.3 The Journal Editor shall ensure that the Journal will carry a listing of all MAHPERD grants and information on procuring applications/forms.
4.4 The Awards Committee, the EDA Council for Services Representative and the Student Advisor, with the help of the President and the Executive Board, shall ensure state nominations to EDA and AAHPERD awards as deemed appropriate.
4.5 The Demonstration School Task Force will continue the Demonstration School Project, its initiatives and awards system.

Priority #5: Provide opportunities for professional growth and development.

5.1 The Convention Planning Committee shall continue to provide opportunities for granting CEU and CHES credits through attendance and participation at workshops and/or conventions.
5.2 MAHPERD shall provide in service assistance through the Professional Development Fund for professionals to attend conferences for the purpose of speaking, receiving awards, running for office, or presiding at the state, district, and or national level.
5.3 The Executive Board shall explore the feasibility of offering interview training at the annual convention and/or Spring Project.
5.4 The Vice-Presidents shall coordinate quality programming at the annual convention.
5.5 MAHPERD will annually sponsor or co-sponsor at least one special project in addition to the annual convention.
5.6 The President will hold a Leadership Development Conference (LDC) for newly elected members of the Convention Planning Committee and new members of the Executive Board following the annual state convention.

Priority #6: Support and promote quality programs.

6.1 The Executive Board, through the use of The Journal, The MAHPERD Web Site, The Spring Project, and The Annual Convention, shall promote the Demonstration Schools to MAHPERD membership.
6.2 The Executive Board shall support school system workshops/state briefings in the areas of health, physical education, recreation, and dance.
6.3 The Executive Board shall cooperate with the Maryland State Advisory Council on Physical Fitness in the support and incorporation of fitness development within new and/or existing programs.
6.4 The Convention Planning Committee will make a concerted effort to equally balance convention sessions between six areas; health, physical education, adapted physical education, recreation, dance and athletics.

Priority #7: Identify and solicit additional means of financial support and funding.

7.1 The Executive Board shall continue to implement this priority to the extent possible.
7.2 The Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) and Hoops for Heart Committees shall continue to actively work with the American Heart Association (AHA) to find ways to maintain and expand the JRFH program.

Priority #8: Maintain association archives.

8.1 The President shall compile and submit to the Archives Committee Chair a copy of all minutes and annual reports.
8.2 The Archives Chair shall compile and maintain the files of MAHPERD.
8.3 The President, Executive Board and Archives Committee shall maintain association archives in a computerized format.

Priority #9: Support and promote research and grant programs in HPERD.

9.1 The Research and Grants Committee will promote awareness of grant and research presentation opportunities to all MAHPERD members.
9.2 The Research and Grants Committee will allocate MAHPERD’s budgetary funds for the use in research and grant programs.
9.3 The Research and Grants Committee will establish a communication system with supervisors in Maryland to promote research and grant programs.
